Osteopathy
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy may be defined as a system, or science,
of healing that uses the natural resources of the body for the adjustment
of its structure, to stimulate the preparation, and distribution
of the fluids and forces of the body, and to promote cooperation
and harmony in the body mechanism. But in addition to being a mechanism,
the body is its own commissariat, taking raw material for the preparation
of new substances, and of forces.
What does a treatment involve?
Osteopaths consider each person as an individual.
On your first visit, the osteopath will spend time
taking a detailed medical history including important information
about your lifestyle and your diet. You will normally be asked to
undress to your underwear and perform a series of simple movements.
This will allow a full diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to
your needs.
With their hands osteopaths identify abnormalities
within the human structure and function. They then facilitate the
body’s ability to heal itself through a variety of stretching,
mobilizing and manipulative techniques. With added exercises and
health advice, osteopaths will help reduce the symptoms and improve
your health and quality of life.
Instead of treating symptoms, the osteopath is
attempting to remove the mechanical and other problems which can
hinder the body’s natural ability to repair itself.
Who can benefit from osteopathy?
Osteopathy is appropriate for people of any age
– from babies and children right through to adults and senior
citizens. The type of problems that osteopaths can help with vary
from simple joint strains, common injury problems – tennis
elbow, frozen shoulders, trapped nerves, whiplash and more complicated
problems which may have a link to the musculoskeletal system such
as headaches, irritable bowel and menstrual disorders.
